It ends with me
Sometimes the most important change begins not when we decide to change ourselves, but when we realize someone is learning how to live by watching us.
When my daughter once said:
“I don’t want to live the way you live.”
It felt as if something inside me had snapped.
Any mother dreams of hearing very different words.
“I’m proud of you.”
“I want to be like you.”
“Thank you.”
But not this.
First it hurt.
Then it stung.
Then I wanted to explain.
To tell her everything she still doesn’t know.
How many sleepless nights hid behind my smile.
How many times I chose not myself.
How many decisions I made for the sake of the family.
How many times I stayed silent because I was sure that was what good wives, good mothers, good women do.
I wanted her to see what for years had remained invisible.
Every compromise.
Every time I swallowed my own feelings.
Every moment I betrayed myself and called it love.
But then I caught myself on one thought.
Does she even have to know the price of my love?
No.
Because that was my choice.
Not hers.
It was then that I first stopped listening to myself.
And began to listen to her.
She wasn’t saying I was a bad mother.
She was talking about something else entirely.
She was talking about my life.
About the life she watched every day.
And suddenly I understood something I had never noticed before.
Children almost never become who we try to raise them to be.
They become who they see us being.
We can talk to them endlessly about love.
But if we ourselves don’t know how to love ourselves, that is exactly what they will learn.
We can speak about dignity.
But if for years we tolerate what destroys us, that is what will become normal for them.
We can urge them to be happy.
But you cannot show a child the road to a place you have never been yourself.
And then I asked myself the question that frightened me most of all.
If one day my daughter lives her life exactly as I have lived mine…
Will I be happy for her?
The answer came at once.
No.
And in that very moment something in me changed.
I stopped thinking only about myself.
For the first time I thought about what I was actually passing on to my children.
Because inheritance begins long before a will.
We pass on to children more than the color of our eyes.
Not only a last name.
Not only habits.
We pass on our idea of love.
Of family.
Of happiness.
Of how much pain is considered normal to endure.
Of whether you are allowed to say “no.”
Of whether a person has the right to choose themselves.
The most astonishing part is that we do this in silence.
Without lectures.
Without moral lessons.
Without long talks.
With every day of ours.
With every choice of ours.
I often think about my parents.
As a child I believed adults knew the answers to every question.
Then came the age when I was sure they were to blame for almost all of my problems.
Today I look at them completely differently.
My mother rarely spoke about her feelings.
Not because she didn’t feel them.
But because no one had taught her how.
She stayed silent.
She endured.
She cried so that no one would see.
Only now, after so many years, is she slowly beginning to tell me what lived inside her all her life.
Sometimes she searches for words for a long time.
Sometimes she falls silent mid-sentence.
As if learning to speak a language that simply did not exist before.
And every time I feel very sad.
Not because she was a bad mother.
Not at all.
She loved me the only way she knew how.
She gave me everything she herself had once received.
It was then that I understood one simple thing.
Our parents don’t pass on to us what they wanted to teach. They pass on what they themselves once received.
That thought changed a great deal.
In place of resentment came understanding.
In place of hunting for the guilty came compassion.
Suddenly I saw in my parents not only a mother and a father.
I saw a man and a woman who had once been children too.
Who were also afraid of something.
Who also had not been taught everything.
Who also made mistakes.
And suddenly the chain became visible.
My grandmother never taught my mother to speak about feelings.
My mother could not teach that to me.
And I…
What will I one day pass on to my children?
That question cannot be avoided.
You cannot answer it with a beautiful quote.
Because children don’t read our books.
They read our lives.
Every day.
With every glance.
With every reaction of ours.
With every silence at the family table.
With every compromise we call love.
That is why I understand today that motherhood was never only about care.
Not only about food.
Not only about a good school.
Not only about safety.
Motherhood turned out to be something far greater for me.
It is the responsibility to look honestly at your own life one day and ask yourself:
“If my children one day become like me, will I be glad of that?”
For a long time I was afraid to answer that question.
Because I knew the answer.
It was then I understood that it is not the children who need changing.
It is myself.
Perhaps this is where real growing up begins.
Not when a person becomes a parent.
But when they stop treating their past as an excuse for their present.
Our childhood really does shape us.
Sometimes very strongly.
We inherit more than family photographs.
We inherit family scripts.
Ways of loving.
Ways of arguing.
Ways of staying silent.
Ways of being afraid.
People of my generation grew up in families where feelings rarely became a topic of conversation.
Far more often very different words were spoken.
“Don’t cry.”
“Endure it.”
“What will people say?”
“Think of others first.”
Many of us were loved sincerely.
But far from all of us were taught to love ourselves.
And perhaps that is why so many adults today keep searching for an answer to a question they once never dared to ask out loud.
“Is it possible to live differently?”
I often wonder why some people manage to change their lives and others don’t.
After all, many read the same books.
Go to the same psychologists.
Listen to the same lectures.
Cry over the same stories.
But years pass.
And someone becomes different.
And someone stays in the exact same place.
I think it isn’t about knowledge.
It’s about one decision that every adult eventually has to make.
To stop looking for someone to blame.
That decision only seems simple at first glance.
In truth it is one of the most painful.
Because until that moment we always have an explanation.
Parents.
Childhood.
First love.
A failed marriage.
Betrayal.
Circumstances.
All of that really does affect us.
Sometimes very strongly.
Sometimes for many years.
There was a time when I too was sure I had every right to explain my life by the past.
And perhaps I did.
Because you cannot deny the obvious.
Our childhood forms us.
The people who were near us in the most important years of our lives truly leave a mark.
Sometimes that mark becomes a support.
Sometimes a wound.
But one day I understood a thought that at first even angered me.
An explanation does not free you from responsibility.
I resisted those words for a long time.
Because they took away the most convenient thing I had.
An excuse.
If the parents are to blame, then you don’t have to change anything.
If an ex-husband is to blame, then you can keep living with the pain.
If childhood is to blame, then you don’t have to grow up.
The role of victim is rarely chosen consciously.
But one day it becomes surprisingly convenient.
Not because a person enjoys suffering.
Not at all.
But because it frees them from the hardest work.
From the work on themselves.
Sometimes I think our generation has learned very well how to talk about trauma.
And that matters.
It is a huge step forward.
We stopped being ashamed of our feelings.
Stopped pretending that strong people don’t cry.
Stopped staying silent about what used to be customary to stay silent about.
But along with that another danger appeared.
Sometimes knowledge becomes an excuse for inaction.
More and more often I hear phrases:
“No one taught me that.”
“I never had that kind of example.”
“I simply don’t know how to love.”
And every time I want to ask a very simple question.
What next?
If you are twenty, thirty, forty, or sixty…
Who is supposed to teach you how to live now?
I think this is exactly where the border between childhood and adult life runs.
Not at eighteen.
Not on the day you receive a diploma.
Not when a person becomes a parent.
But in the moment they stop waiting for someone to come and live their life for them.
We live in an astonishing time.
We update our phones almost every year.
Master new technologies.
Study artificial intelligence.
Change professions.
Learn foreign languages.
Move to other countries.
We take it as given that the world is constantly changing.
But for some reason we keep living with beliefs that took root when we were seven.
Why?
Why do we install a new version of a phone without fear, yet put off a new version of ourselves for years?
Probably because it is much harder.
You can update an app in a few minutes.
Updating your own beliefs sometimes takes years.
For that you have to admit that the problem has long since stopped being only in the past.
It is also in the decisions we make today.
That realization was a turning point for me.
I stopped asking:
“Why did my life turn out this way?”
And began asking something completely different.
“What can I do now?”
The answer turned out to be both simple and incredibly difficult.
To learn.
Again.
Like a child.
To learn to speak about my feelings.
To learn to ask for help.
To learn to respect my own boundaries.
To learn to leave places that hurt.
To learn to stop being convenient.
Sometimes people ask me:
“So does that mean parents have nothing to do with it?”
Of course they do.
They gave us our childhood.
But they cannot live our adult life for us.
The older I get, the less I want to look for someone to blame.
And the stronger the desire to understand.
My mother did not teach me to speak about feelings.
Because no one taught that to her.
My father was not always able to be emotionally present.
Perhaps because once, as a little boy, he too was told:
“Men don’t cry.”
They did not pass on to me what they wanted.
They passed on what they themselves had received.
And suddenly, instead of resentment, compassion arrived.
For the first time I saw in my parents not only a mother and a father.
I saw people.
Just as lost.
Just as imperfect.
Just as hungry for love as I once was.
And then a new question was born in me.
Perhaps the most important of all.
What ends with me?
I want the fear of being myself to end with me.
I want silence to end with me.
I want the belief that love must always demand self-sacrifice to end with me.
I want my children never to think that happiness has to be earned.
I don’t know how long it will take me to change myself.
You probably cannot learn this in a single day.
I still make mistakes.
I still sometimes choose old reactions.
I still catch myself wanting to stay silent where I need to speak.
But today there is one difference.
Before, I waited for my life to change someday.
Now I understand.
It changes every time I choose to act differently than I would have yesterday.
And perhaps that is how family scripts end.
Not in a single conversation.
Not after one book.
Not after one round of therapy.
They end every time one person makes a choice no one before them made.
And that is when hope appears that our children will one day inherit not only our facial features.
But also our courage to live differently.
There is one phrase I hear very often.
“What ungrateful children these days…”
Every time I hear those words, something tightens inside me.
I understand where they come from.
Behind them stand sleepless nights.
Work without days off.
Fear.
Exhaustion.
The desire to give children what we ourselves once lacked.
Probably every parent has at least once dreamed of hearing a simple:
“Thank you.”
And there is nothing wrong with that.
We all want to feel that our efforts were not in vain.
But one day I understood a thought that completely changed my relationship to motherhood.
A child’s love cannot be counted as gratitude for parenthood.
Because children do not arrive in this world already in debt.
They promised us nothing.
They did not ask us to give up our dreams.
They did not ask us to live only for them.
That was our choice.
And that is why the responsibility is ours as well.
Not only to feed them.
Not only to clothe them.
Not only to give them an education.
A parent’s greatest responsibility lies somewhere else entirely.
To create, beside the child, a space in which they never doubt that they are worthy of love.
Not for grades.
Not for achievements.
Not for being convenient.
Not for obedience.
But simply because they exist.
When my daughter was little, I thought love was measured by how much I could do for her.
The best classes.
Interesting trips.
Good clothes.
Gifts.
I sincerely believed that a good mother must always give more.
Work more.
Sacrifice more.
Only years later did I understand how deeply I was wrong.
Children almost never remember the cost of gifts.
They remember the atmosphere.
They remember their mother’s face when they open the door at home.
They remember whether it was allowed to cry.
Whether it was allowed to make mistakes.
Whether it was allowed to tell the truth.
Whether it was allowed to be yourself.
I think real presence cannot be measured in time.
You can spend a whole day side by side and still never meet.
And you can sit together for only twenty minutes, phone set aside, tasks forgotten, and give a person the feeling:
“Right now there is no one more important to me than you.”
There is a memory I love very much.
One evening, at the end of the day, I wanted only one thing.
Silence.
I had absolutely no strength left.
And suddenly my son sat down beside me.
He began telling some long story.
Honestly, at first I was barely listening.
I was thinking about household chores.
About everything else I still had to get done.
And suddenly I caught myself thinking.
For him this story is the most important thing in the world right now.
I put the phone away.
Looked at him and simply began to listen.
Without advice.
Without wanting to finish the conversation faster.
After a few minutes I saw how his face changed.
He was smiling.
He didn’t need a solution.
He needed to feel that he mattered.
Since then I often remind myself of one simple thing.
When a child comes to us with their story, they are not coming for an answer. They are coming for us.
It is in moments like these that trust is born.
Not during expensive trips.
Not on a birthday.
Not at graduation.
But on the most ordinary evenings that later, somehow, become the most important memories.
My daughter is almost grown.
She has her own life.
Her own friends.
Her own plans.
Sometimes it seems to me that she no longer needs me quite as much.
But every time she comes up to me.
Silently.
Hugs me.
And simply stands beside me.
For no reason.
On no holiday.
With no request.
In moments like that tears always come to my eyes.
Because I understand.
Hugs like that cannot be bought.
You cannot earn them with expensive gifts.
You cannot demand them.
You cannot beg for them.
They are born of trust.
Of a sense of safety.
Of thousands of small moments when a mother was truly present.
Perhaps that is when I understood one more thing.
The most important presence in a child’s life is not physical.
The most important presence is presence in their memories.
That is why it matters so much to me today that my children never learn to stay silent.
I want them to know.
Their feelings matter.
Their pain matters.
Their joy matters.
They themselves matter.
Sometimes I think about the future.
Perhaps one day my daughter will become a mother.
Or perhaps she won’t.
That will be her choice alone.
Maybe my son, too, will one day hold his own child’s hand.
Or maybe his life will unfold completely differently.
And that will be his choice as well.
But if one day a small person stands beside them who can, without fear, talk about their first love.
About their first mistake.
About their shame.
About their dream.
If they know they will not be judged.
Not shamed.
Not forced into silence.
If they never have to earn love.
Then something has changed.
Not because I became perfect.
Not because I never made another mistake.
But because one day I had enough courage to stop.
To look at my life honestly.
And choose a different path.
I cannot change my childhood.
I cannot rewrite my family’s history.
I cannot live my parents’ lives for them.
But I can do the most important thing.
Not accuse.
Not make excuses.
But become the adult who takes responsibility for their own life.
And if one day my children live more freely than I did…
Perhaps that will be enough.
Not in order to forget the past.
But so that it stops defining the future.
Then I will quietly say to myself:
It ended with me.
«Quiero parecerme a ti.»
«Gracias.»
Pero no esto.
Primero me dolió.
Después me ofendió.
Cuántas veces elegí no elegirme a mí.
No.
Y empecé a escucharla a ella.
No.
No solo hábitos.
Mi mamá no pudo enseñármelo a mí.
Y yo…
No solo comida.
No solo una buena escuela.
No solo seguridad.
Heredamos no solo fotografías familiares.
Heredamos guiones familiares.
«No llores.»
«Aguanta.»
Esa decisión solo parece simple a primera vista.
Resistí mucho tiempo a esas palabras.
Si tienes veinte, treinta, cuarenta o sesenta años…
¿Quién debe enseñarte ahora a vivir?
Y empecé a preguntar algo completamente distinto.
Aprender.
Otra vez.
Como un niño.
Aprender a hablar de mis sentimientos.
Aprender a pedir ayuda.
Aprender a respetar mis propios límites.
Mi papá no siempre supo estar emocionalmente cerca.
Todavía me equivoco.
Todavía a veces elijo reacciones antiguas.
No solo alimentar.
No solo vestir.
No solo dar educación.
Solo años después comprendí cuánto me equivocaba.
Silencio.
No me quedaban fuerzas en absoluto.
Y de pronto se sentó a mi lado mi hijo.
Empezó a contar alguna historia larga.
Me abraza.
Y elegir otro camino.
No puedo cambiar mi infancia.
No acusar.
No justificarme.
